New Groove Magazine Presents: Despite the Darkness

  1. How did you come up with the band name ?
    Bryan: It was a three-day process, Jason and I were just throwing these awful names back and forth at each other. I was reading something and saw “Despite the darkness” and I was just like “that’s it!”
  2. Tell us about where you come from and how that reflects in the music.
    Being from Chattanooga we have such a great music scene that’s been here for the last 20 years. This is a good town for it, everyone tries as much as they can to support local music.
  3. Tell us about the song-writing process, how do you create your music ?
    Jason: It’s always different with me. Sometimes all the lyrics will come to me, sometimes I’ll have a riff that I mess with enough to work with, others it comes all at once.
    Bryan: For me I’m usually just wanking off on the guitar and then something cool comes out of it. Then I’ll try to come up with some lyrics right away.
  4. Who has influenced you the most ?
    Eric: Motorhead;
    Jason: I was gonna say Lemmy;
    Eric: Ozzy;
    Bryan: Everything from Robert Johnson to Propagandhi. Music moves me, man.
  5. What was the first song you or your band ever wrote? Tell us if you performed it, trashed it, etc….
    The first one we worked on together was “The Wolf”. It’s a jammer that we’re still playing.
  6. What song are you most connected to or proud of ?
    Eric: I just enjoy playing them. I’m happy to be doing this again.
    Jason: I like “Take the Ride: it’s a fun one. Bryan: I guess “Know Your Enemy”, I like how we both sing on it. But really I love rockin’ them all.
  7. Do you enjoy playing live and what do you enjoy about it ?
    Eric: Yes, I enjoy it, and can’t wait to do it again.
    Jason: Yeah I miss that shit so much. Bryan: I think that’s the only reason to do this. To have the opportunity to play live. That’s my favorite part. Having someone you know, or don’t know, sing along or just raising Hell. That’s the coolest connection you can have.
  8. What is next for the band ?
    Eric: Put together six more songs, record them, and then just keep doing it.
    Bryan: We may have a hard copy of the last recording soon. And then we’ll play some live shows around as soon as it’s safe again.
  9. Any additional thoughts or comments you would like to add ?
    We just want to say thanks to New Groove Music for doing this interview. And as a final thought “ Fuck Racism”.
