New Groove Magazine Presents: Follow Your Bliss (FYB)

Genre: Metal

  1. How did you come up with the band Name?
We all grew up in Baltimore, I know for a fact that we all have mad love for our city and it will always be home, but at the same time we all have our vices in Baltimore so it’s hard. Solemnly is a song on our upcoming ep about Baltimore and touches on some of the struggles that we’ve dealt with as a whole, drug addiction, alcohol abuse, attempted suicide. But, at the end of the day we love Baltimore, the city will always spark inspiration for us. The music scene has been CRUSHING IT in Baltimore over the last few years and I’m so excited to be apart of that and witness the growth first hand. Every time we book a show in Baltimore it’s always a giant party, by the end of it we’re dead tired and drenched in sweat, that feeling is addicting.
  1. Tell us about the song-writing process, how do you create your music?
The way I write songs was inspired by Kurt cobain. A simple guitar rhythm is always first with drums in mind, after that comes lead guitar. Once the guitar is completely finished, drums are thrown in. The drums and rhythm are the most crucial part in the writing process, that determines how the song will be laid out. Next comes bass, and last comes lyrics. It’s kind of backwards but that’s how I do it and it flows the easiest that way. I will always have a melody in mind from the start, but that usually is changed completely once drums and bass are laid out. Sometimes the original melody stays but sometimes it grows when the song is being shaped by the rest of the band
  1. Who has influenced you the most?
Our biggest influences are blink-182, senses fail, Four year Strong, yellow card, heavily inspired by that early 2000’s emo punk with a modern twist
  1. What was the first song you or your band ever wrote? Tell us if you performed it, trashed it, etc.….
The first song we wrote as a band was called “no more”, it’s actually still one of our favorite songs to play live. It started as our opener but we loved it so much we decided to start closing with it. It’s about not taking shit from anyone and finally doing what you need to break free from the normal cycle of a boring life. This was before I became the full time lead singer, I only sang half of the vocals on the recording. One day we’ll re-do the song the way we play it live… and I  can’t wait for that day
  1. What song are you most connected to or proud of ?
Vertical is a song that’s very close to all of us. At first we actually hated it because it was so boring and slow. One day I decided we should drop the tuning down a full step and our drummer suggested to speed certain parts up and it just blossomed into the single that we have our now. Not only is it fun to play, the lyrics truly hit home and I connect hard to certain parts when singing it live or even at practice. That song will always be a powerful one for me.
  1. Do you enjoy playing live and what do you enjoy about it?
Any musician will tell you, Playing live is the most fun part about being in a band. The truth is we put in so much work behind the scenes practicing and making sure the songs are perfect and that we sound super tight, on the night of the show we can just let our bodies take over and enjoy the show. The most rewarding part as a singer is looking into the crowd and seeing even one person singing with me, it’s the most heart melting rewarding part about performing, at least for me.
  1. What is next for the band?
We are recording our Christmas song to be on rad pops Christmas album, we also will be releasing our next single titled “Stoned” later this fall. The ep will be out either this winter or early 2021! 2020 has given us a lot of free time so we’ve been writing and we’re excited to show everyone what we’ve been working on!
