New Groove Magazine Presents: Southern Governor

Genre: Southern Rock and Metal

  1. How did you come up with the band Name?
The story of the band’s name can be a long story. If you haven’t heard of us before you should know that all three band members are brothers. Our dad came up with the name and suggested it, we had a list of about 5 or 6 names and we were sitting around a fire pit while camping with our family one weekend and decided to go with the name. It’s unique and that can be hard to come up with in today’s day and age. We’ve had a lot of people say how they love the name, one of which being Rickey Medlock of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
  2. Tell us about Where you com from and how that reflects in your music?
We are from the outskirts of Winchester, Virginia, in a small rural area called Gainesboro. The good thing about coming from a small town, you are free to sound like yourself, if you look at certain parts of the country you’ll find some bands tend to sound like each other or what is popular in their region. There was no pressure to sound like anyone else to fit into any click. We grew up and still live back in the woods where you can make as much noise as you want, we like to hunt and fish, and we draw inspiration from nature and just a simple way of living.
  1. Tell us about the song-writing process, how do you create your music?
We don’t have a particular routine when we write.  Generally speaking, most of our songs start off with a guitar riff idea, from there we will jam on it together until we have the basis of a song. Sometimes it will take a few hours to have a song written and other times it might take several weeks, we always try to write lyrics while we are working on the arrangement of the song, that tends to work best in case we need to change a riff or a certain part of the song. We try our best to make all of the elements of the song the very best it can possibly be, instead of just making sure we have a catchy lyric melody, we make sure the instrument side of the song is just as interesting.
  1. Who has influenced you the most?
We are heavily influenced by Lynyrd Skynyrd, we grew up listening to Skynyrd and a lot of 90’s and classic country, as well as classic rock. When we first started to learn how to play we came across a southern rock tv special featuring Skynyrd one night on CMT, that really got us hooked! We also draw inspiration from many classic and modern artists from multiple genres.
  1. What was the first song you or your band ever wrote? Tell us if you performed it, trashed it, etc.….
The first song we ever wrote was this little guitar riff progression in the key of E, we eventually worked it up into a song called I’m Moving On. The song did make a few live performances in the early days of playing 4 hrs sets in the local bar scene. Maybe one of these days it will get revamped and on a record!
  1. What song are you most connected to or proud of ?
Our favorite song we have currently written is a song called “Love is Gonna Keep on Trying”.  We wrote it around 2 years ago, and it will be on the next album we do. The song has more of a ballad vibe to it and really showcases each member’s sound and writing ability.
  1. Do you enjoy playing live and what do you enjoy about it?
We love playing live. We like the energy you get from playing in front of a crowd. Being able to play our songs for people of all walks of life, in different states and countries is something we don’t take for granted.
  1. What is next for the band?
The next thing on our agenda is putting out more new music, and hopefully being about to do more touring in 2021
  1. Any additional thoughts or Comments you would like to add?
