New Groove Magazine Presents: Cryosphere

  1. How did you come up with the band name ?
In 2016, we had to decide on the name for our band and so each of us threw names in the mix and we democratically talked about the different names and which direction we wanted our music to take. It was a long process of talking about pros and cons, but in the end we voted. One could say that the plan for our musical path wholly began on the day we decided on the name “Cryosphere”.
  2. Tell us about where you come from and how that reflects in the music.
Well, we all live in Denmark and even if we are not as visibly impacted by the likes of climate changes and global warming, we are starting to see how we are affected by this. We normally have winters with snow, but we have had decreasing amounts of days with snow in a calendar year. This year for instance, we didn’t have snow at all.
Living in Denmark we feel very blessed, as we have a great social safety net and less to none severe problems in our society, but we are very aware of global politics and how difficult life can be for some people. And so we would like for everyone to be aware of the issues that affect us all. Hopefully we will be able to inspire our listeners and plant some seeds for the future generations, so that we all can live peacefully with both nature, with ourselves and within our social structures. We cannot keep on existing in an unsustainable world and if we as a race continue going down these paths we are on now, we will destroy it all. So one could say that our music is based on humans, human nature and self improvement, as we see the destruction that surrounds us, but we also see the beauty humans can bring to the world, the hope that we share together and that we can overcome any hindrance as long as we work with each other towards betterment.
  3. Tell us about the song-writing process, how do you create your music ?
That is actually a tough question! We do not have a model for how to create songs. It depends on the song really, sometimes it is a theme we decide upon, sometimes it is the lyrics that are written first and sometimes it is a riff that starts it all. Examples from our new EP ‘Constellations’ are ‘Into Decay’, which was a lyric based song and ‘I Am Become Death’ is a more music/riff based song in terms of the process. One way or another cannot describe our process and that is also the fun of the writing process and creating art! You never know where your ideas will take you or where inspiration strikes.
  4. Who has influenced you the most ?
Emil: For me as of now the band Red influences me a lot! Otherwise bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium has influenced a lot early in my musical career.
Sirene: I have had many influences throughout the years, and it depends on where my head’s at at the time of writing. I have been influenced by various bands, artists and genres, some of them are: Blondie, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Ville Valo, Jared Leto, Motionless In White, Bring Me The Horizon, In This Moment and so on. But I usually get inspired by words, sentences and notions. Various books, movies and documentaries have had a big impact on me. I have notes and diaries everywhere with sentences and ideas. I like to write down phrases that catch me. A specific way of saying something or symbolism can become a whole song if I obsess enough over it.
Anders: For me i think bands like Metallica, Bullet For My Valentine and Dead By April influenced me a lot when i first started music when i also played guitar. And as of now i hear the band The Ghost Inside a lot due to the strong vocals Vigil has.
  5. What was the first song you or your band ever wrote? Tell us if you performed it, trashed it, etc….
Sirene: The first song that we finished was actually “Ashes To Ashes”. It sprung from an idea that I had. I wanted to write a song that wouldn’t consist of repetition. A song that would not focus on verses and chorus, but something that was dynamic and evolving. I knew that it was a bit crazy to start with such an difficult idea, but I was determined to try and I somehow convinced Emil that we could do it. I had this very specific lyrical idea to go with it, which sprung from both my curiosity and sadness about life and what comes after death. It was a whole train of thought started by me re-reading some of David Bowie’s lyrics and I was so fascinated by the way that he portrayed life and death in this writing. But after I wrote the the main idea for the lyrics, David Bowie sadly passed away, which I felt was a sign of sorts. So, I went over the lyrics again. In the end it became an homage of sorts, to all my ‘predecessors‘, everyone that had inspired me throughout my life, who had passed or who I would never meet, as well as a call to arms for myself to embark on my own musical journey. We’ve actually performed ‘Ashes To Ashes’ a lot even though it hasn’t been released until now. ‘Ashes’, as we call it, has a way of hyping up everyone during our shows, because of the dynamics of the song. And the way that the audience have been responding to it, has really ignited us. I, myself, feel very proud of this song especially, since it embodies all my feelings of apprehension and awe, starting over as an adult and picking up the torch, from people that I really admire and respect.
  6. What song are you most connected to or proud of ?
Emil: I am proudest of “I Am Become Death”, as the guitar have a very modern feel to it and the interplay of the instruments and the use of pauses are great! Also the Electronics, synths and the choir used gives a very epic and dramatic effect that I really love.
Anders: For me Nevermore is the song I am connected to the most. When i first read the lyrics that Sirene presented I felt so sad and connected with it as a source of letting out some of my frustration on the matter on behalf of friends that has family issues which I luckily do not have.
Sirene: I can honestly say that I am proud of every song on this EP. They all have a special place in my heart, since they have come to be, in very different ways and they all have a very personal story that differs from each other. The songs on this EP all come from a very long and emotional journey, and I am so happy that we can finally share them with the world.
  7. Do you enjoy playing live and what do you enjoy about it ?
We all love to play live! Especially now we miss it a lot because of Covid-19. We cannot wait to go out there again! It is always a great feeling to perform on stage and meet up with fans, friends and family afterwards. We love that we get to connect with other people through our music. We get to meet them before or after the show and hear their stories, and how they have been inspired by our songs, and it is so precious to us, that we are able to touch and inspire people in the same way that we have been touched by music ourselves. We feel immense pride that people connect so much with us and our values, and therefore live shows is a very special experience for us in the sense that we get to meet with “our people”, our community.
  8. What is next for the band ?
We have many plans in the band, however we will have to wait and see what the aftermath of Covid-19 will look like, before we can decide a path. There is no doubt that would like to play live shows as soon as we are able to. And in the meantime, we are trying to build and grow our community online, through our social media platforms and our discord community server. During times like these, we feel it is important to socialize with like minded people, to encourage and inspire each other so that we all may reach the other side of this as whole as possible. We invite anyone interested to join our community. We talk about new music, creating music, writing poetry, online gaming, and a lot more.
