Falset

Sleeping giants of Midland, Ontario

Genre: Metalcore/Modern Rock/Djent

Bio:

With their unique blend of metalcore, modern rock, and djent, FALSET has garnered a ton of buzz due to their enormously energetic live performances. FALSET showcases heavy-hitting breakdowns, soaring melodic vocals, and virtuosic guitar solos. With a heavy sound and very melodic approach, the main focus is on vocals. The band has a clean, professional, heavy metal/rock ‘n roll feel where each player has his own identity, but at the same time, they’re completely unified musically and visually. Metal Hammer UK calls the band’s approach “liberal and unrestricted,” leading to their “unique footprint in the heavy metal sand”. FALSET has risen quickly to the top in their hometown scene of Midland, Ontario, playing to packed venues throughout the greater Toronto area. Most notably, the band has had the opportunity to catch the attention of festival goers as part of the eminent Vans Warped Tour, and support appearances at the prestigious Toronto Opera House in their home province. In 2018, the quartet released their first EP entitled ‘Here We Are’ and the group solidified, ready to inject a fresh and lively dose of modern and highly original artistry into Canada’s musical landscape. Rolling into the second half of 2020, FALSET aims to notch their momentum up even further with the release of their forthcoming full-length album ‘We Follow Or Lead The Way’, showcasing the band’s newest material across Canada, the US, and expanding their audience around the globe.

Meet the Band!

Chance LaBrie (Drummer/Founder)

Growing up on the road with his dad (James LaBrie/Dream Theater) — and being fully immersed in music as a kid — really paved Chance LaBrie’s musical path. At eight, he was playing guitar and at twelve, he started playing drums and knew for sure that becoming a professional musician was his destiny. Mostly self-taught, LaBrie got tips and pointers from Mike Mangini and other drummers he had gotten to know. LaBrie founded FALSET and shortly after was joined by high-school friends Braeden Kozy and Zach Copeland. They remained the band’s core members as they went through the necessary lineup changes. Some of the bands LaBrie has been influenced by are System Of A Down, Nickelback, Dream Theater, Korn, Northlane, Architects, Bring Me The Horizon, and Metallica. LaBrie uses Pearl Drums with Remo Heads, Sabian Cymbals, and Vic Firth Drum Sticks.

Zach Copeland (Vocalist/Lead Guitarist)

The first music that really spoke to Zach Copeland was early ’90s grunge, and he progressed toward heavier music over time, getting into bands like Architects and For Today, but also Neil Young and Pearl Jam. Early on, Copeland took guitar lessons, then practiced with intensity. And he always had a natural ability to sing. Copeland says that he wants FALSET to reference some past rock influences, but also to project a truly of-the-moment sound. “The band’s songs have a naturally upbeat and energetic feel, and I want our fans to feel that vibe, see how interlocked the band’s chemistry is, and grasp how well we work and sound together.” Copeland explains that he joined FALSET because the members of the band had the same musical initiatives that he did. “We all had the same idea; to start something great.” Copeland plays ESP guitars, uses podHD for tone sculpting, and runs the signal chain through a Peavey 6534 tube amp and a Mesa cabinet. Copeland’s musical future is clear. “I feel like my place in the industry is really all about writing and performing. It’s awesome listening to FALSET bring songs to life that I’ve had a part in creating.”

Braeden Kozy (Guitarist/Scream Vocals)

Some of Braeden Kozy’s early musical influences were System Of A Down, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, Trivium, and Metallica (which had the strongest impact). Later, bands like Asking Alexandria and Bring Me the Horizon influenced Kozy. He notes how bands like Architects,Northlane, Chelsea Grin, and Erra are, as is FALSET, melodic and heavy all at once. Kozy explains, “I think FALSET sounds epic; it’s very fresh rock/metal. We have a unique sound and stage presence that enables fans to get up and into the emotion behind our music and lyrics.” Early on, Kozy took drum lessons, but once he picked up the guitar, he never looked back. He spends countless hours finding the perfect sounds while recording. His go-to guitar has always been Ibanez. Besides being the first guitar that he ever owned, he explains that he’s always loved both how it sounds and plays. Kozy recently started alternating in an Ernie Ball JP Majesty guitar as well, and uses a Peavey 6505 with a Mesa cabinet because it gives him that huge, tight,high-gain sound that he clearly prefers. Kozy says “I’m always keeping up with the latest gear; I constantly analyze what makes great live shows and make sure that we both play and record our own music to achieve the best, highest-quality result.”

Riley Fields (Bassist)

Riley Fields’ influences are wide-ranging — classic rock, metal, pop, metalcore, and djent – from bands like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Queen, and Guns ’N Roses, to Nickelback and Linkin Park, Bring Me The Horizon, As I Lay Dying and Periphery. Fields joined FALSET after many years of searching to find a band that shared his musical vision and drive. Before joining FALSET, Fields was a music teacher, and says that sharing his love for music inspired him never to give up on his own musical dreams. After working with local musicians for many years, Fields explains that it was clear he had to go forward and find a band whose aspirations, drive, and dedication matched his own. “When I met the band, I immediately packed my bags and moved across Ontario to join them, and two years later, I’ve never regretted that decision.” Fields uses Dingwall, ESP, Darkglass, Dunlop, Ernie Ball, D’Addario, Fractal Audio, and Behringer gear. He continues to hone his recording, mixing and mastering, songwriting, music theory and sound design skills, and says he absolutely cherishes his place with the band. Fields’ passion is clear: “With the members of FALSET, I feel that I’ve found my musical home.”
